Robot & Frank

3

Frank Langella steals more than scenes here

Frank Langella plays a former  catburglar succumbing gradually to dementia in Jake Schreier’s oddball drama, which at its best recalls the quiet sci-fi loneliness of Silent Running

His concerned son (James Marsden) buys him an intelligent house robot to act as carer, and Frank’s initial reluctance fades as he sees an opportunity to recover his life of crime.

Langella’s sly, winning performance is a joy, and Robot’s creepily blank features ensure the robot-bonding moments never get schmaltzy.

But this is still a makeweight and oddly anti-climactic effort, skirtingthe borders of real darkness but never quite daring to jump.
