Sarah's Key

A journalist finds her life entwined with a young girl whose family was torn apart in the Vel' d'Hiv Roundup

A real-life wartime atrocity has Kristin Scott Thomas’ modern-day reporter probing the past in a sensitive drama that leaves its Holocaust-based horrors to the imagination. That said, what we do see is harrowing enough: the scenes of Jews suffering in a Parisian velodrome before being carted off to death camps keep us indignant enough to tolerate later narrative contortions.

KST’s cool compassion is matched, in flashbacks, by Melusine Mayance’s Sarah, the girl who literally holds the key to unlocking this elegant if somewhat prosaic tear-jerker.
