A housewife turns prize-winning stable owner

Secretariat review

Diane Lane had luck, God and selective breeding on her side in this fact-based tale of a ’70s housewife turned stable owner who turns a promising colt into a Triple Crown winner.

That should suffice for Seabiscuit fans, who will enjoy watching our heroic thoroughbred take on all comers in the well-shot races that punctuate Randall Wallace’s saga.

There’s fun to be had seeing Lane’s Southern spitfire battle scepticism and sexism en route to glory, but there’s an overcooked undercurrent of gospel-singing, Biblequoting sanctimony.
