Sense And Sensibility

Ang Lee brings this Jane Austen classic to life

A prestige Hollywood adaptation of a Jane Austen novel is never going to win cool points, but what a feat this is.

Ang Lee fearlessly chose this Regency romp for his first non-Taiwanese project, and it’s a piece of directorial casting that really pays off, his outsider’s eye curious about the bizarre social niceties of Austen’s England.

Sensational cast, too: Emma Thompson (whose screenplay won an Oscar) and Kate Winslet as dissimilar sisters in search of husbands, Hugh Grant at his most awkwardly charming and a darkly dashing Alan Rickman.

Buoyant and loveable, it’s a sparkling reminder that ‘quality’ doesn’t have to mean ‘stodgy’.
