Effortlessly shifted to the modern day...

Effortlessly shifted to the modern day, Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat’s three-part Sherlock Holmes reboot cleaves closer to Conan Doyle than Guy Ritchie’s romping revision.

Benedict Cumberbatch nails Holmes’ glinting brilliance and Martin Freeman is a stalwart Watson. Moffat’s opener is energetically clever and, while part two is less smooth, Gatiss’ ferocious finale combines riddles with revelations and moves like the clappers.

Killer cliffhanger, too: the Beeb better get season two’s game on fast.
