Michael J. Gallagher’s creepy feature debut sees insufferable college kids investigate rumours of a featureless killer with a smile cut into his face who pops up when you type ‘I did it for the lulz’ three times into notorious internet image board 4chan.
Trying to sound bleeding edge about something as transient and ephemeral as the internet almost always ends in ‘embarrassing Dad’-style outdatedness, though Smiley does at least have something to say and doesn’t feel as misjudged as Hideo Nakata’s cyber-bullying cringe-maker Chatroom.
Think Candyman for the Twitter generation.
