French director Olivier Assayas directs his next movie after the biopic of Carlos the Jackal

French director Olivier Assayas follows his biopic of Carlos the Jackal with this semi-autobiographical tale of post-1968 revolutionaries.

It opens with the clash between Parisian police and activists in 1971, then tracks a group of students as they mobilise, their left-wing ideologies informed by love, art and the encroachment of reality.

Sincere and unsentimental, this warmly lensed, fluently edited drama is studded by outstanding set-pieces and wry humour.

The period soundtrack is exceptional.
