A slick and thought-provoking take on the monster-movie

Splice review

Dr Moreau-style mad science gets grafted onto chin-stroking social commentary in Cube director Vincenzo Natali’s Cronenbergian tale of a pair of geneticists (Adrien Brody, Sarah Polley) who engineer a new hybrid species from animal and human DNA.

As the unlikely surrogate parents shepherd their creation through an accelerated adolescence, a surprisingly nuanced, disturbing, taboo relationship drama emerges from the monster-movie template.

It doesn’t quite make the most of it, but the effects are slickly done for such a low budget.
