There’s something reassuringly girl-next-door about Canadian actor/director Sarah Polley.
Never more so than in her third film as helmer, a documentary exploring a juicy secret from her family’s past, which cleverly interweaves interviews with surviving relatives and re-enactments to try to establish the facts. It’s impossible: the gently warring recollections gradually turn into a treatise on the slipperiness of truth itself.
Indeed, the only certainty you’ll take away is that everyone’s family is as strange as yours. It may sound self-indulgent, but actually it’s beautiful – the most intimate, elegant home movie you’ll ever see.
