Straw Dogs

3

A couple are terrorised by hillbillies in the Deep South

Harrowing, classic, controversial: these are the traditional adjectives used to describe Sam Peckinpah’s censor-baiting 1971 thriller. Yet for all its lasting legacy, the story of Dustin Hoffman vs inbred Cornish rapists is a valid remake candidate.

Shame this US ‘re-imagining’ swaps full-bodied Merlot for watered-down Ribena as James Marsden and Kate Bosworth are terrorised by hillbillies in the Deep South.

Keeping the same story beats but losing the edgy ambiguities, director Rod Lurie (The Last Castle) delivers a straw remake.
