Tales from the Lake District

This gentle, ginger-beer-and-dinghies adap of the beloved 1920s Arthur Ransome tales won’t rivet Potter-hardened tweens. But its outdoorsy charm and unabashedly pre-Health-and-Safety adventures of the intrepid Walker children (campfires, bow and arrow assaults and firework pranks loom large) will provide a great nostalgia rush to middle-youthers.

Director Claude Whatham captures sun-dappled Lake District landscapes that shimmer on Blu-ray. But only Susanna Hamilton, later seen in 1984, stands out among the child performers. The extras are surprisingly meaty, including amateur footage of the shoot.
