Directed by celebrated stunt guru Yuen Woo Ping (pre-Matrix/Kill Bill), this period kung-fu actioner stars Jet Li as a disgraced Shaolin monk who redeems himself as an outlaw, joining forces with Michelle Yeoh’s drunk to confront his former BFF (Chin Siu Ho).
Despite the sometimes creaky mix of goofy humour and frenzied, bone-crunching violence, the non-stop fight scenes are expertly staged.
Wires are often visible and the transfer isn’t the best, but as Brett Ratner gushes in one extra: “To me, Yuen Woo Ping, is God.”
