Family saga from Francis Ford Coppola

Unfazed by the derision that greeted Youth Without Youth, Francis Ford Coppola continues his comeback with this operatic family saga, whose overheated plot is countered by cool B&W photography (dissected in one of three featurettes).

A scenery-chewing Vincent Gallo is the self-exiled son of an abusive father, who’s incensed to be visited by his young half-brother (newcomer Alden Ehrenreich) while his long-suffering girlfriend (Maribel Verdú) tries to keep the peace.

From here on the plot lurches ever deeper into melodrama, as family skeletons come rattling out of every closet.

Still, dull it isn’t, and you have to admire the 71-year-old Coppola’s energy.
