Definitely kooky and ooky, less so mysterious and spooky, Barry Sonnenfeld transforms Charles Addams’ macabre New Yorker illustrations into a bonkers black comedy.
There’s a cobweb-thin plot about fake relatives and lost inheritance but it’s really all about family – Anjelica Huston’s vampish Morticia, Raul Julia’s pinstriped Gomez, Christopher Lloyd’s light-bulb-sucking Fester and Christina Ricci’s goth girl Wednesday (not to mention the SFX achievement of a severed hand that runs around on its fingertips).
The puns might drown out the screams, but you could still drive a hearse through its delightfully devilish streak.
