The Adventures Of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert

A transexual and a pair of drag queens head up this camped-up road movie

Despite the blizzard of sequins, wigs and mascara, Stephan Elliott’s camped-up road movie still has enough grit and danger to make it superior to its stage cousin.

Hugo Weaving, seven years before playing Elrond, is nicely low-key as the drag queen who begins a road trip from Sydney to Alice Springs with Guy Pearce’s detestable drag rival and Terence Stamp’s weary transsexual in tow.

Between the familiar road movie beats, it crackles with blistering dialogue and touching character moments.

It may veer a bit in tone, but Elliott’s visuals help glue everything together.
