A blistering cameo from Total Film’s own Tom Dawson is just one reason to sample Ken Loach’s intoxicating latest, a dour look at Glaswegian NEDS that unexpectedly matures into a feel-good, Ealing-style comedy.
OK, so this tale of a young delinquent (Paul Brannigan) hatching a scheme to spirit away coveted Highland hooch does require a sizeable suspension of disbelief. (No such thing as a victimless crime?)
But, as with Kes, there is something to be admired in Loach’s faith in rough-diamond potential - not to mention his newfound nose for a happy ending.
