The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

OAPs travel to a creaky retirement home in India

Despite pushing Made In Dagenham for the worst title in modern Brit cinema, this is 2012’s shock box-office hit.

It’s down to the ‘Expendables’ of elderly British acting – including Dame Judi Dench (sad widow), Tom Wilkinson (secret past), Dame Maggie Smith (daft racist) and Bill Nighy (crumbling marriage) – as OAPs travelling to a creaky retirement home in India (run by Dev Patel, obviously) where they learn to love spicy food, foreigners and each other.

It goes on a bit too long, but this bittersweet comedy is surprisingly funny, sharp and sweet.
