The Book Thief

3

Get ready to cry...

The muddle of English and faux-German accents is just one awkward clash in Brian Percival’s elegant but misjudged prestige punt at Markus Zusak’s Holocaust novel. Sophie Nélisse shows intuitive smarts as an innocent orphan girl forced to comprehend incomprehensible atrocities.

Geoffrey Rush makes sensitive work of her foster dad, too, but Percival’s direction takes the cosseting too far: tasked with tackling history’s horrors, he offers kitsch Christmas-card visuals and moral platitudes.
