DreamWorks’ prehistorical romp has its own prehistory, having started out as an Aardman project co-scripted by John Cleese.
The resulting tale of a Stone Age clan seeking a new home after losing their cave isn’t something different, but then it’s clear that a few jagged edges have been knocked off to ensure family-and franchise-friendly fare.
Kids will adore the croco-dog, piranha parrots and other critters that patriarch Grug (Nicolas Cage), feisty daughter Eep (Emma Stone) and co meet on their travels.
It’s all a touch broad for grown-ups, though – a Jurassic lark epochs away from prime Pixar.
