The Devil's Double

3

Twice the Dominic Cooper, half the subtlety

“You’re a good man in a bad job,” Dominic Cooper’s Latif hears during Lee Tamahori’s brash, highly watchable, ultimately misjudged slice of historical fiction.

As understatements go, it’s vast – yet despite being plucked from the street and forced to act as body double to Saddam Hussein’s psychotic son Uday (also Cooper), Latif is played as oddly sanguine, too weak to function as a moral centre.

It’s as the manic, mercurial Uday that Cooper shines – so much so that the film seems at times to be revelling uncomfortably in his raping and pillaging antics.
