The Dictator

Sacha Baron Cohen unleashes another alter ego

Sacha Baron Cohen unleashes another alter ego in his first non-mock-doc comedy since the Ali G movie.

Maybe that explains the dilution of Borat/Bruno-style outrage: the script makes the star play too nicely.

Surely there was more humour to mine in General Aladeen’s (Baron Cohen) desert domain.

When the North African despot arrives in the US and gets mushy with Anna Faris’ vegan feminist, Baron Cohen risks betraying satire for sentiment.

The uneven script fires shock-factor laughs but it’s a shame to think Baron Cohen’s best work happened on the promotional trail. Isla Fisher and a pair of murderous breasts feature in the extras.
