The Driver

4

Freewheeling O'Neal...

Ryan Gosling and Nicolas Winding Refn owe a hefty debt to Walter Hill’s atmosphere-dripping, neo-noir crime drama, not only for its ‘skilled getaway driver’ plot, but also for its laconic style and taciturn dialogue.

Ryan O’Neal is The Driver, wheeling away from major robberies; Bruce Dern is The Detective, becoming increasingly obsessed with catching him; and we are The Audience, soaking in every hard-boiled sequence right from the intense car chase that kicks off the film’s stone-cold opening. It’s a brooding, neon-kissed thriller that couldn’t be cooler even if O’Neal wore a scorpion-emblazoned jacket.
