The East

Following 2011’s Sound Of My Voice, director Zal Batmanglij (yes – he does have the coolest name in Hollywood) and his producer/co-writer/star Brit Marling reunite for another cult-centric tale – this time about a group of eco-extremists intent on targeting big business baddies.

Framed as an espionage thriller – Marling’s security operative infiltrates the group to destabilise it – the film neatly stokes the tensions between Marling, Alexander Skarsgård’s guru-like leader and Ellen Page’s suspicious devotee.

But as Marling gets increasingly drawn into the group’s gung-ho strategies, the plot falls prey to some overheated melodrama.

Meaty stuff, all the same.
