It started and ended right here for great british director Michael Powell.
This bittersweet melodrama sees the inhabitants of a remote, rocky scottish island clinging to their dying way of life. The story of star-crossed love and feuding families feels dated, for sure, but the cliff-climbing finale still holds dizzying power.
Powell called it “the turning point in my life in art” and, after decades making masterpieces, he revisited the island with a camera in 1978. The resulting lovely doc (included here) was the last thing he ever shot.
