The Fifth Estate

WikiLeaks portrayed with Wikipedia accuracy

Benedict Cumberbatch plays white-haired WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in this whistle-stop tour of the whistleblowing website’s backstory. Assange denounced the script but needn’t have worried; it goes easy on the controversial Aussie.

Co-starring Daniel Brühl as put-upon cohort Daniel Domscheit-Berg, Bill Condon’s film tries to spin a Social Network-like tale of geeky rivalries – a move as misguided as the director’s attempt to depict cyberspace as a room full of computers...

But with Cumberbatch magnetic, and David Thewlis and Peter Capaldi on fine form as Guardian journalists courting Assange, it’s still a vivid, energetic watch.
