Predator and prey become bosom buddies in Disney’s 24th full-length animation. The fact that Tim Burton, Brad Bird and Henry Selick worked (largely unthanked) on it lends a significance that’s hardly justified by its slim, simplistic narrative.
Yet younger viewers will warm to its critters, especially in early scenes of carefree frolics that precede darker episodes of tense adolescence. As Big Mama the owl, jazz crooner Pearl Bailey takes vocal honours.
But for all its incidental delights this remains a lesser entry in the Mouse House canon.
