The Great Gatsby

Don't be tempted by this sub-standard F. Scott Fitzgerald adap

Thanks to Baz Luhrmann’s blingtastic adaptation, you may feel tempted to scratch that F. Scott Fitzgerald itch with this.

But take some advice: don’t. This woefully inadequate made-for-TV version fumbles the novel’s heartache, heartbreak and era-defining aura with ashen production values and insipid direction that looks better suited to American daytime soap.

Toby Stephens is a grinning hollow man as Gatsby, Mira Sorvino makes a tremulously irritating Daisy, while Paul Rudd is either bored stiff as narrator Nick or merely flaunting the comic-everyman skills that would eventually make him an invaluable part of the Judd Apatow stable.
