Lean, mean, accomplished, ‘Jaws with paws’ thriller

Dubbed ‘Jawswith paws’, Joe Carnahan’s lean, mean, accomplished thriller lives up to the billing thanks to a palpable sense of place (and climate) and dread-building sleight-of-hand in revealing its animal assailants.

It’s essentially a guess who-dies-next elimination game, as a group of stranded oil workers fight against wolves on unforgiving Alaskan tundra.

The Grey toys with bombast (a tree-leaping scene jumps the shark and there’s too much poetry going on) but its strength lies in a welcome smattering of characterisation, a spectacular plane crash and Liam Neeson’s grizzled charisma as a heartbroken hard-arse.
