The story of a man's life destroyed by false allegations of child abuse

Competing with fellow Cannes entry Amour for most upsetting drama of 2012, Thomas Vinterberg’s film is an excruciating study of a good man (Mads Mikkelsen) whose life is progressively destroyed when a child in his care flippantly accuses him of touching her.

Mikkelsen picked up Best Actor on the Croisette for his restrained turn as teacher Lucas, clinging to his dignity as paranoia and group hysteria wipe out years of trust and friendship.

It’s dotted with humour and tenderness, but still highly chilling: that you can see what’s coming only increases the impact.

Beautiful to look at, painful to watch.
