The Hunter (2011)

3

Willem Dafoe sets his sights on a rare Tasmanian tiger

Crags, cheekbones, a man on a mission.

Some films don’t need much, as Willem Dafoe’s monk-ish martin hunts a Tasmanian tiger in elemental landscapes.

The minimalism grips, so it’s a shame Martin’s tussles with locals and romance with a troubled neo-hippie (Frances O’Connor) loosen the plot towards a needlessly harsh twist ending.

While the hunt is on, the settings, Robert Humphreys’ stark cinematography and the star’s hungry physiognomy tell the real, timeless tale here: a lost soul’s pursuit of himself.
