With nuanced killers currently all the rage on the small screen (Bates Motel, Hannibal), it’s sadly noticeable just how little Ariel Vromen’s true crime story has to say about its trigger-happy protagonist Richard Kuklinski (Michael Shannon), a mob man whose kill count reached triple figures in ’70s New York.
The respectable suburban life he kept up is what intrigues most, with Winona Ryder giving strong support, but his criminal life feels painted by numbers.
Chaotic and uneven in a way that fits its mercurial and ill-defined subject.
