The Kings Of Summer

4

Coming-of-age royalty

Three teenage boys build a cabin in the woods – though not one of the Joss Whedon variety.

Instead, this ramshackle tumbledown is merely to provide Joe (Nick Robinson), buddy Patrick (The Big C’s Gabriel Basso) and oddball tag-along Biaggio (Moises Arias) a sanctuary from their overbearing parents, at least until the food runs out and tensions torpedo their exuberance.

We’ve been there, done that, built the fort.

Yet what’s so delightful about Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ indie-com debut is the way he takes the script’s Stand By Me staples and makes them shine anew like freshly polished pennies.
