Fourth time round, Steve Coogan delivers his best work for Michael Winterbottom in the biopic of porn pioneer Paul Raymond, the so-called King of soho.
Overcoming the silly wig and saucy postcard vibe, Coogan flourishes in this ultimately moving tale of a wealthy man who, emotionally at least, was left bankrupt by family tragedy.
Bolstered by a strong cast – Imogen Poots as daughter Debbie, Tamsin Egerton as lover/muse Fiona Richmond – Winterbottom does a fine job of conveying Soho across three decades.
It’s not perfect – the grating title song included – but then it could’ve been a softcore Carry On. Ooh, missus!
