The Machinist

Sickly, bleak but utterly compulsive viewing...

The Machinist review

Christian Bale shed 63lb and gained tons of post-Equilibrium credibility for Brad Anderson’s sickly grey existential thriller.

Trevor Reznik (Bale) is an auto-factory worker whose clawing paranoia has cost him a year’s sleep.

What’s eating Reznik proves anti-climactic but Bale’s Method masochism beefs up the thin script, giving intense focus to interior landscapes.

Anderson admits on extras to being “both appalled... and thrilled” by the spectacle of Bale’s self-abasement. So are we.
