The Monuments Men

Not the best paint job...

Ocean’s Eleven go to war in George Clooney’s WW2 caper, which aims to turn the Allies’ efforts to recover looted Nazi art into a springboard for Kelly’s Heroes-style hijinks, only to get bogged down by earnest sermons about the importance of safeguarding Europe’s cultural heritage.

The laboured results entirely lack the fleet-footedness the material demands, partly thanks to a cast that, Matt Damon and Cate Blanchett aside, look like they’ve all been sprung from a Hollywood old people’s home. The moral of the piece appears to be that art is worth dying for – just so long as you’re not American.
