This YA fantasy is at its best during the gradual reveal of a Neil Gaiman-ish supernatural world (as seen from the POV of Lily Collins’ heroine Clary) and at its worst during Twilight-inspired adolescent eye-fluttering.
It’s a strong premise poorly executed, a promising introduction to a race of demon-hunting half-angels smothered by stacks of extraneous lore – vampires, werewolves and warlocks spin through in a blur.
Tighter editing might have streamlined the action at the expense of the romance, which doesn’t so much build as linger.
