The Phantom Of The Opera

Back in 1925 before the music...

Is this the face that launched a thousand Broadway performances? They called Lon Chaney ‘The Man Of A Thousand Faces’ and his scarred performance as Erik established the Phantom as a landmark monster.

Universal’s 1925 outing hasn’t stood the test of time, though, as it’s a leaden potboiler.

As Chaney’s Phantom drags Christine (Mary Philbin) into his lair beneath the opera house, it wants to sit in Universal’s creature feature line-up, but it never earns a place alongside Dracula or Frankenstein.
