The Possession

3

Another horror presented by Sam Raimi

The ‘based on true events’ tag slapped on Ole Bornedal’s film probably extends as far as a young girl buying a fancy looking box at a yard sale.

Yet that’s just the start of the trouble for struggling single dad Clyde (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) as his daughter Em (Natasha Calis, putting in an excellent performance) falls under the spell of a whispering casket that’s eerily covered in Hebrew writings.

The Jewish angle makes a welcome change to the well-trod Catholic perspective on demons, even if events quickly drop into a standard possession horror once the box is opened.

Aiming for scares, The Possession falls short at creepy.
