The Rum Diary

2

Johnny Depp gets sozzled in San Juan

Before the fear and loathing of the mid ’60s shot him to infamy, Hunter S. Thompson’s brilliant first novel fictionalised his own experiences as a young hack in Puerto Rico.

A twitchy Johnny Depp is the only choice to play Thompson’s alter ego (even if he is 25 years too old), mixing drinks with Aaron Eckhart and Amber Heard on an ex-pat paper in San Juan.

Withnail’s Bruce Robinson directs his own script with smarts and soul, leaving the book behind and telling a loving origin story about the late superhero of Gonzo journalism.
