Dreamgirls meets The Commitments

Dreamgirls meets The Commitments in this ’60s-set sing-a-thon, a truth-based tale of four soulful Aboriginal girls who make their way from Crocodile Dundee country to entertaining the troops in Vietnam.

Directed by Wayne Blair, who starred in a stage version of the story, it sees former Australian Idol starlet Jessica Mauboy sparkle like her sequinned dress as songbird Julie.

Meanwhile, Chris O’Dowd provides the funnies as their manager, and the film busts its gut trying to give you feelgood.

But from the cut-price war scenes to the scrappy one-note rom-plot, the second half hits too many bum notes to really charm.
