The Tarnished Angels

One of Douglas Sirk's bleakest films

One of Douglas Sirk’s bleakest films, Angels reunites Rock Hudson, Robert Stack and Dorothy Malone from ’56’s Written On The Wind, this time in stark, widescreen B&W.
The story’s adapted from William Faulkner’s novel Pylon: Stack’s an embittered ex-WW 1 flying ace reduced to touring the carny circuit, Malone’s his parachutist wife, with Jack Carson the mechanic carrying a hopeless torch for her when Hudson’s boozy journo sees a romantic story in the washed-up trio.
Sirk mines sombre poetry from these lives, though a tacked-on happy-ish ending lets him down.
