The Thomas Crown Affair

Pierce Brosnan likes his art and will stop at nothing to get it

Given John McTiernan is serving a 12-month prison sentence for perjury, it’s ironic his last directorial success should be about an urbane thief with a talent for outfoxing the authorities.

It’s no lie, though, to call this a surprisingly accomplished update of Steve McQueen’s 1968 heist caper, with a raffish turn from Pierce Brosnan as the bored playboy who delights in pinching priceless paintings.

Rene Russo is no Faye Dunaway, but that’s no hardship, McTiernan having cast the real thing as Brosnan’s shrink.
