The Unbelievable Truth

The first film from director Hal Hartley

Hal Hartley’s debut feature established from the start his highly individual tone: offbeat and idiosyncratic, fuelled by elliptical, literate dialogue and bone-dry deadpan humour.

Audry (the late Adrienne Shelly in her screen debut) is a teenager living with controlling parents in a Long Island township.

When Josh (Robert John Burke), a taciturn stranger, shows up in town and starts working for her father, she’s drawn to him despite rumours about his past. As the title hints, Hartley is exploring questions of knowledge and reality, but always with the lightest of satirical touches.
