TT: Closer To The Edge

4

This feature documentary discovers why modern TT riders still risk their lives to win the world's most dangerous race

A SPORTS MOVIE THAT OUTSTRIPS GENRE basics, Richard De Aragues’ racing doc revs up a portrait of high-risk humanity. Non-devotees of the Isle of Man’s fearsome Tourist Trophy road race needn’t be wary: it’s less about bikes than motorbike maven Guy Martin, a larger-than-life daredevil with a droll wit.

Sure, some tourist-y scenic stretches drag a little. But as the bike’s-eye cinematography – scary even in 2D – serves visceral views of dangers braved by our hero on snaking roads, TT becomes a seatgrabbing and almost uplifting immersion in life lived at obsessive extremes, less George Formby’s No Limit than Grizzly Man on wheels.
