Upstream Colour

4

Carruth's puzzle, piglets and romance

It took Shane Carruth nine years to follow up his headfuck time-travel debut Primer; it will take 90 more to work out what it means.

The ‘plot’ involves Cronenbergian grubs, marauding piglets, a menacing foley artist (Andrew Sensenig), a troubled man (Carruth) and a lost woman (Amy Seimetz).

Part conspiracy movie, part love story, Upstream Colour’s elliptical narrative favours soft-edged visuals and supple edits over dialogue.

Themes emerge but meanings remain out of reach. A movie to be felt rather than understood, it’s like Malick directed Memento.
