On release, critics went bananas for this adap of the Broadway musical, and it was showered with 10 Oscars, including Best Picture and both Supportings (for George Chakiris and Rita Moreno).
The intervening 50 years have been mildly unkind: this Romeo And Juliet update’s street slang now verges on hilarious, while the innocent portrait of gang warfare strains to convince.
Still, there are several showstoppers truly worthy of the name and Jerome Robbins’ choreography is sensational.
Extensive extras confirm it was a bastard to make.
