What Maisie Knew

4

An early education in loneliness...

When her parents opt to split, a child’s life turns to shit in an achingly sad update of Henry James’ 1897 novel, directed with a rare empathy by Scott McGehee and David Siegel that makes the plight of the titular Maisie (Onata Aprile) all the more affecting.

Left to fend for herself by philandering art dealer Steve Coogan and ageing rock chick Julianne Moore, this neglected little poppet receives unexpected solace from her parents’ respective partners (Alexander Skarsgård and Joanna Vanderham), thus enabling her quietly heartbreaking story of shattered innocence to double as a subtly subversive endorsement of unconventional families.
