It may be getting a shiny new BD release but writer-director Ron Shelton’s film about two basketball hustlers hasn’t aged well.
Shelton (Bull Durham, Tin Cup) is a master at making sports movies that are less about the match play and more about the characters.
Yet even his back-and-forth dialogue and pithy putdowns aren’t enough to save the film from its Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus relationship clichés. Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes remain on good form as the bickering duo teaming up to take on competition in LA’s shadier areas.
But overall this misses the three-pointer it was going for.
