Adult animator Ralph Bakshi (who also made the ’toon version of The Lord Of The Rings) set out to make a “kids’ film”, but his counter-cultural mindset remained far too twisted to go straight. The result? Fairy prostitutes plying their trade and mutant Nazis paralysing opponents with footage of Hitler. Bakshi’s imagination hits both narrative and budgetary roadblocks: in hi-def, the crude animation is flecked with scratches. But there’s a visionary heft to the detailed backdrops and “try anything” technique.
