Yellow Submarine

The Beatles' animated odyssey

Requiring 180 animators and 14-ish scripts, The Beatles’ “mod odyssey” remains a riot, expertly navigated by Canadian director George Dunning.

Drawing on his background in ads and animation, and honouring writer Lee Minoff’s hope to go “beyond anything seen” while “avoiding the precious and pretentious”, it splices arty ambition with the mop tops’ mirth and music.

Plotting is slight – the band save pop-loving Pepperland from Blue Meanies – yet the trippy images and narrative stretch animation’s boundaries.
